Inner Michael

I think I told you about the “Pay it Forward” thing we do at church once a year. We pass the collection plate and after it comes back full of money, the minister makes an unusual announcement: We are going to pass the plate again, this time while it’s full. We invite you to reach in and take whatever cash you will need to “Pay it Forward.”

You may want to donate the money you take to the homeless shelter; you may want to buy some children’s books for the library; perhaps your neighbor is having financial trouble and you want to take him a bag of groceries. Think about how you can make a difference and pay it forward, then reach into the plate and take a handful of cash– enough to pay for your idea. Then write a paragraph about what you did with the money. Our city brightened that week.

I had never seen anything like it and the first time I attended a Pay it Forward service, I almost fell out of the chair. Who ever heard of taking money out of the collection plate? Have you ever paid for a MacDonald’s breakfast for the guy behind you in line? I once took a Latte to a Delta booking agent after a flight had been cancelled and she was frantically trying to get people on another airplane to their destination while some of them were swearing at her. She brightened immediately. Humanity certainly had not ingratiated itself in the eyes of that Delta agent and I was sure I was personally responsible for a mass redemption that day– at least in her mind.

Being an artist, I used to paint mini paintings and slip them between the pages of a book, onto a restaurant table when I passed by, on a windshield now and then to kind of say– appreciate art. And to brighten their day. I used to call it anonymous art. It makes people smile.

A “Pay it Forward” campaign is a way to make the world a little brighter. So I was tickled when I was asked to Pay Michael Forward. Well, that’s easy. Michael paid so much foward, it was the least I could do. So there you are.
