Blessed Are The Educators

Change rarely takes place within a paradigm. The dwellers of an infrastructure can become so “at home” in the place that they don’t see the need for repairs or additions or maybe even the value of razing the structure and starting over.

Expecting the inhabitants to change might be a little like waiting for the fox to bring the hens home as guests for dinner and not entrees. Why is it we lack the integrity to police our own? Why do we lack the courage to make change where change is needed? And why can’t we evolve to the stage where we realize there is a moral barometer for the collective? When will we get that we live in an interconnected and interdependent web? That what one does affects the whole?

What does it take to create the meme of personal responsibility? I remember the sixties bumper sticker, a quote from Richard Bach’s wife, Leslie Parrish who said “Suppose they gave a war and nobody came?” I remember too: “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.” It seems to me that in those days we did a better job of looking back upon ourselves and asking: “Do I like what I see in the mirror?” And we had John and Yoko reminding us to be part of the global “love in.”

Who is doing that now? Where is the protesting youth saying very loudly and emphatically: enough is enough? We had Michael Jackson saying “We’ve Had Enough” but he also said “I can’t do it by myself” and “You’re the chosen one” and “I’m gonna need some kind of sign.”

Michael knew the children had the answers. I believe that too. And apparently so do many of you. And so does Voices In Education Project because I just heard from the Executive Director who said “I do want to move forward with the curriculum.” I sent her a poem about words and attached all of the responses I got from Michael people. So you will be hearing more from me/us. I am asking those who said “Yes, use me!” to stay tuned. The ‘Violence and Words’ curriculum will not happen overnight; it will take some time to develop. And then I will ask all those silent voices, those who feel the protest rising to get behind this project and promote it. Will you ‘help Michael sing it?’

Voices likes what I had to say and what you had to say and Marilyn sent her thoughts:

to explore a personal definition of the term: “word.”
to consider how others have referred to the significance of words.
to recognize how and why we use certain words.
to recognize the importance of being able to name oneself.
to define and analyze words that are used within the concepts of diversity
to explore the power of words

Some of the activity headings:
Creating a personal definition.
Considering other people’s thoughts.
Moving towards using words seriously and sensitively
Naming yourself
Changing language signals changing social values
Worldview What is it?
The Power of the Word
Name Power

So it looks like we have the bones of a curriculum and will be adding the flesh as we go.

So here is what I want to say to the children of the future:

We know you. We send you love. We hear your cries from here. We know what kind of world you want to live in and we are stepping into the space called “personal responsibility” and we will meet you halfway. We give you our greatest gift- to imagine a future where you never need to be afraid of “words.” A place where your voice is heard and everyone has a voice. An authentic voice. We will do our very best. You have our word.

With these bones…the journey begins! I am still on board, Barbara, and willing to do whatever God and Michael inspire me to do! This journey has been filled with many surprises, and I don’t expect this one to be any different. I will listen carefully to my Inner Michael! This is a wonderful way to make that change in Michael’s name. God Bless You for leading the way!
